violence + crime

Tomorrow the Miami Herald will have this picture on the front page. The Herald is a serious newspaper and usually not bloodthirsty but this afternoon the former Miami City Commissioner Arthur E. Teele Jr. fatally shot himself in the head in the lobby of The Miami Herald building. He walked into the building, asked to talk with one journalist, took out his gun and waited till the police arrived. Then he pulled the trigger.
Last week the commissioner was arraigned on 26 counts of federal mail fraud, wire fraud and money laundering.
Ok .. that is bad ... but I noticed quite a lot of crimes in the last couple of week. This morning a young woman was shot to death by her former boyfriend in her car in front of her apartment while other tenants were witnessing. Then he reloaded his gun ... and killed himself. Last week there was a drive by shooting at the house of a local cop, last month a 16 year old boy was stabbed to death while he was on his way to a local shop to cash a winning lottery ticket.
I have been down here several times ... but I never noticed so much fatal violence. Could it be the heat that drives the people kind of crazy? I lived long enough in the USA to notice that there is more violence then in Germany ... or I might have to say ... there is more fatal violence ... but that is easy to explain because of the lack of opportunity to get guns in Germany. But is that the only reason?
